Roughly translated as 'tongue of the tree people', Shyriiwook is the prevalent language of the Wookiees. A complex and elegant language reflecting the complexity of Wookiee society, Shyriiwook is nearly impossible for other species to pronounce. Since it is based on sounds that harken back to the time when language first emerged on Kashyyyk it can sound animalistic and primitive to foreign ears, but is an elegant and expressive tongue with over 150 words for 'wood' depending on the wood's properties, seasonal words indicating natural indications of the climate, fifteen words cognate to 'violence', and the words meaning 'to make' or 'made' translating to ones describing artistic crafting.

Speaking Shyriiwook[]

Because of the structure of the Wookiee mouth, Shyriiwook is difficult to speak, a difficulty augmented by the fact that the tongue and lips are mostly unused in the formation of words. By locking their mouth open, stilling their tongue, and eminating sounds from the back of the throat, some humanoids can manage proper pronunciation, but few have the sheer lung capacity to manage the shifting of tones required to truly speak Shyriiwook. Most Wookiees, at least those who have taken to space travel, understand Basic, however, so the onus of understanding is usually on the non-Wookiee. For the same reason that other species cannot master Shyriiwook, Wookiees cannot speak Basic. Given the propensity of these large sentients to become impatient, communication can be rather a challege between species.
