Modern Corellian is the descendant of Olys Corellisi, having enough in common with Galactic Basic to be somewhat intelligible to those who understand it, providing the speaker is slow and careful with pronunciation. Spoken at normal conversational speed, the intelligibility fades, particularly since Corellian is rife with regional dialects and specialized words and terms. One of the oldest languages in the galaxy in some form, it is rich in meaning, very expressive, and a favorite of poets and songwriters.
Several dialects exist. Regionally there are Coronet, Bela Vistal, Tyrenan, Southern and Islander, all of which are mutually comprehensible and characterized mainly by alternate meanings to established words and differing inflections. There are also the slightly different Noble Corellian and Common, or Bourgeois Corellian (the latter term being somewhat demeaning). Noble Corellian is a flowery, highly descriptive form with rigid pronunciation guidelines while Common Corellian is less regimented and relies more on inflection to convey meaning. Most people speak a version of Common Corellian.
